The term ´trompe l´oeil` was coined in the early 19th century in reference to the illusionnistic painting. The fascination with optical illusions goes further back in the history of western art and it is rooted in the Greco-Roman world. The anecdote cited by Pliny the Elder in his ´Natural History` about the contest between two exceptional greek painters, Zeuxis (Zεύξις) and Parrhasius (Παρράσιος), is emblematic: the former painted grapes so realistic that birds tried to pick at them but the latter managed to deceive the trained eye of Zeuxis himself who tried to open the curtain painted by Parrhasius thinking it contained the painting. This mythical episode acknowledges the key role that painting has played in the intriguing relationship between reality and simulation, intended to fool the observer into thinking that what is before him is real. In his Waldszenen, Scènes de la forêt, Schumann re-created in romantic terms nature´s sounds and sensations, just to tell us about other things... In the Vogel als Prophet, L`oiseau prophète, we follow the explorations of a mysterious bird. The piece has a suspended end as though the bird mysteriously disappeared... Most music lovers know that Claudio Arrau has offered us his reading of the complete Robert Schumann´s piano opus. A major achievement. And another Phillips recording which will be identified by YT filters as Sony´s property... Schumann, as a pianist here, explores the art of the toucher. Arrau´s fingers are shockingly limpid. The master painters, presented in this video, excell in both tasks. A lot of the presented paintings in the video were shown at the exhibition ´Art and Illusions, masterpieces of Trompe l´Oeil from antiquity to the present Day`, curated by Annamaria Giusti in Florence, Palazzo Strozzi, october 2009-january 2010.
