Bolero es la vida. Bolero is life. Gabriel Garcia Márquez. And indeed it is since it contributed to the sentimental education of the South Americans mainly in the 50´s and 60´s -the golden years. It taught the stiff Europeans and N. Americans the meaning of the word sensuality. So many huge artists, wondeful songs, poetic and dramatic (even exagerating) lyrics! In the 70´s it started to decline, the golden voices disappeared and its decadence reached its peak with Julio Inglesias and Luis Miguel and their conconctions-sentimentalist revivals. Bolero derives from the Cuban and later Mexican rythme of danzon. It shares with danzon its fast part, the famous cha cha. Nothing to do with the spanish bolero. Lucho Gatica was born in Chile in 1928. One of my favourite artists and a legendary voice. I have almost all his records and beleive me they are a lot. His sensuous, creamy voice used to reign in S. American hearts for decades. He grew up listenning to Guillot, Marini, Rios and Cugat. He had a consistent career, lived in México and often visited USA conforming to the artistic norms of the 70´s. People used to call him Fr. Sinatra of the south, if this is a compliment. (Just kidding, Frank had a great voice. Only.) Lucho offered us tunes like Me importas tú, Contigo en la Distancia, No me Platiques Más, Tú me Acostumbraste, Voy a Apagar la Luz, La barca etc. Contigo al fin del mundo (with you up to the end of the world, with you I would go), bolero by Laredo, is not one of the most dificult ones to sing.
