
Guiomar Novaes (1895-1979) Brazilian musician, child prodigy who was considered the greatest woman pianist for most of the 20th century. Born in Sao Joao da Boa Vista,SP, she was the 17th of 19 children. Initially she studied with L.Chiafarelli. With aid by the brazilian government Mme Novaes was sent to audition for admittance to the Paris Conservatory before a jury of Cl. Debussy, G. Faure, M. Moskowski a.o. The jury selected her from 389 other participants and she studied with Is. Philipp, graduating in 1911. Concert tours in France, England and Italy. She used to be the star of the Concerts Colonne. American debut in 1915. In Theatro Municipal de Sao Paulo in 1922. Mme Novaes has been admired for her intense, intimate and charming interpretations particularly of music by romantic composers. She represents the French piano taste and she is a model of limpid technique. She has also performed works by south American composers like the famous brazilian Heitor Villa Lobos and Octavio Pinto, her husband. Mme Novaes was awarded the Brazilian Order of Merit in 1956.
