Never trust a composer that sets for one direction and takes another way, just follow him! Louis Moreau Gottschalk, New Orleans 1829-Rio de Janeiro 1869, is a talented, admired by Hector Berlioz, peripatetic pianist and composer of french creole wealthy mother and english-german father. Education and illustrous friends in Paris, cast a spell on Switzerland and Spain, family in New York, scandals in California (accusations of compromising a female choir student), fuge in Panama, tours in Cuba and Puerto Rico in 1857 with a thirteen years old singer (ops, her name was Adelina Patti), triumphant tours in the Caribes, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil... His curiculum is full of joies ephemères and relocations, leaving a trouble idea of his huge and varied artistic production though a clear one that he also knew the dark side of life. His danzas, like the one we listen to, often have the elegance of a mazurka by Chopin-drunk-on-mojitos, of course. A master of syncopations, he is also considered the prophet of the n. american ragtime. My fotos were taken on a joyful Sunday morning of August 2000, in the casa de trova of Trinidad de Cuba. I thank these wonderful people for welcoming me to their party at their casa de cultura. I salute them from Greece. Pianist Noel Lee has dedicated a full cd on works by Gottschalk and manifests plenty of understanding of this music. This video-funny-santeria-tale came the way it is against my (the so emphatically called) free will, the idea appeared while I was making it. Enjoy.
